Welsh Rugby Joins the Beat!

Rugby clubs across Wales are preparing to host ‘Join the Beat’ this weekend, a legacy project organised by the Welsh Rugby Union to boost participation levels at community rugby clubs.
Sixty-eight Welsh rugby clubs have signed up for the recruitment weekend on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 January, which was introduced to encourage involvement in the community game following the huge interest generated by Wales’ World Cup performances.

Aberystwyth, Blackwood, Canton and Waunarlwydd rugby clubs are among the registered venues that will open on Saturday or Sunday morning to welcome prospective players, volunteers, coaches, match officials, first aiders and administrators to the game.

After receiving the WRU’s official event pack which includes flyers, posters, giveaways and recruitment cards this week, Waunarlwydd RFC volunteer, Jason Tanner, is looking forward to the upcoming events.

“Join the Beat is an exciting initiative which reaches out to those in the community who have not yet had the opportunity to join the fantastic rugby club atmosphere that our seasoned club members enjoy week in week out,” said
Mr Tanner.

“Waunarlwydd RFC runs thirteen teams, through Under 7s to our first team in the SWALEC League Division One West, and without the input and enthusiasm of our volunteers, this simply would not be possible.

“While we have been actively looking to recruit young players between the ages of six and nine, I hope this initiative captures the imagination of the whole community and that we’re able to sign up everyone from new players, volunteers and supporters this weekend.”

In clubs all over Wales, experienced club members will be available to give advice and answer questions about how to become an active participant in the game.

WRU Club Development Officer Nicola Smith said: “The response from the clubs has been fantastic and everyone that I’ve spoken to at the participating venues are really getting behind the opportunity to recruit new participants at the ‘Join the Beat’ events around Wales.

“With greater participation our community clubs can thrive to become the hub of the communities they represent and everyone involved in Join the Beat is enthusiastic ahead of this weekend.”

Anyone wanting to get fit, make new friends and give a little back within their community, can ‘Join the Beat’ this week at any of the clubs below.

Wales’ RBS 6 Nations training squad will be just one player short of their full contingency tonight (Monday) after gathering for duty in Gdansk, Poland ready for a week of intense training ahead of their opening clash with Ireland a week on Sunday.

Prop Gethin Jenkins is the only absentee from the 35-man squad announced last week – he remains at home in Wales due to a knee injury he picked up during the Blues’ victorious Heineken Cup clash with Racing Metro on Sunday – but it is hoped he will travel to the Cetniewo Camp in Gdansk to meet up with his international colleagues before the week is out.

Training begins in earnest tomorrow (Tuesday), with Monday used primarily as a travel and recovery day, although it did include the cryotherapy sessions which are being utilised by Wales at the Olympic sports village to aid the recovery process, both from injury and training.

Scarlets fly-half Rhys Priestland (knee) and Dragons back row Dan Lydiate (ankle) both also left the pitch during their respective European matches this weekend, but both players will train in Poland whilst managing their injuries.
Blues centre Jamie Roberts (knee) is progressing well, he will also continue his rehabilitation on Eastern European soil.

Clermont full-back Lee Byrne, who left the field of play with a problem with his thumb at the weekend, has sustained no lasting damage and he is able to take a full part in what will be a tough week this week.

The countdown is on for the cream of talent in Wales at Under 20 level to rubber stamp their selection for the forthcoming Six Nations campaign. With Wales beginning their campaign at Dubarry Park against Ireland on Friday, 3 February, the 36 players named in an extended training squad know the clock is ticking if they are to realise their ambition of making the squad as there are just four training sessions left to impress.

Coaches Danny Wilson, Ioan Cunningham and Byron Hayward will put the players through the gruelling sessions before finalising the 30-man squad selection at the end of next week.

Players have the extra incentive of putting their hand up for selection for the World Cup squad which will take part in June’s Junior World Cup to be staged in South Africa.

And with 10 players missing due to other commitments – including Tom Habberfield, Harry Robinson and Rhys Patchell who are on international Sevens duty – a number of players have been drafted in to be given an unexpected opportunity to stake their own claim.

Wales Under 20 Team Manager, Mark Taylor, said: “The 10 players excluded will be available for the Junior World Cup, therefore it is important that those who are selected for the Six Nations take their opportunity to push their case.”
